Steph Curry ankle injury: Kerr shares update on Warriors star
Published in Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – The Golden State Warriors will have their superstar available for the season opener on Wednesday.
Steph Curry suffered a right ankle sprain during the Warriors’ open practice on Sunday. After practice at Chase Center on Monday, coach Steve Kerr said Curry feels “fine.”
“Steph practiced today,” Kerr said. “I’m always concerned when Steph limps off, but I went down and checked on him, and he told me he was fine.”
Curry, 38, was dribbling during the team’s scrimmage Sunday and begun to pump fake, defended by De’Anthony Melton, when his right leg buckled. Curry hobbled across the court to the bench, then went back into the team’s locker room, where he was evaluated by the team’s medical staff.
The fans in the arena for the team’s only open practice of the season held their collective breath as the franchise icon left the floor.
Curry spent the entire offseason rebuilding his routine in an attempt to keep his ailing right knee in better condition. Curry missed 39 games last season, 27 of those absences caused by inflammation in his right knee.
The coaching staff also reworked their practice structure, keeping Curry off the floor as much as possible. He then played the fewest preseason minutes of his career, averaging just 18 minutes per game and playing into the second half just twice.
In Friday’s preseason finale against Portland, he played just 23 minutes.
Curry has never missed a season opener.
Though Curry is expected to be good to go, the Warriors backcourt is still dealing with injuries. Kerr said Brandin Podziemski tweaked his back on Sunday and did not participate in practice on Monday. He is day-to-day. Reserve center Charles Bassey also did not practice as he deals with tendinitis in his right knee.
The Warriors will already be without Kristaps Porzingis, who is around the team but has yet to return to the court as he deals with an undisclosed health issue. Porzingis returned to the team last week after being away for training camp and the beginning of the preseason schedule.
Golden State will host the Memphis Grizzlies for its home opener on Friday, then immediately head back out on the road for a three-game trip to Phoenix (Saturday), Denver (Oct. 26) and Minnesota (Oct. 28). After that stretch, the Warriors will play six consecutive home games starting with the Lakers on Oct. 30.
