Prince Harry among celebs on hand for historic Knicks-Spurs Game 5
Published in Basketball
Among the celebrity fans in the stands for the New York Knicks-San Antonio Spurs championship game in San Antonio on Saturday, perhaps none was more surprising than Prince Harry.
The U.K. royal attended Game 5 with Purple Heart recipient JP Lane, a U.S. Army veteran who has won six gold medals in the Warrior Games, a 15-year-old U.S. Department of Defense adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured U.S. service members. The prince was in town to attend this year’s Games, which are being held in San Antonio from June 13-20.
Harry has said Lane was one of his inspirations to create the Invictus Games, a worldwide competition for wounded, injured and ill military service members. He was reportedly at the game thanks to an invite from NBA commissioner Adam Silver, a source told People. It was not clear whether he had a favorite team, People noted.
The usual courtside celebrity cadre also flew down to San Antonio to witness what turned out to be NBA history, as the Knicks clinched their first championship in 53 years.
Timothée Chalamet, who famously ripped off his shirt after the Knicks miraculously won Game 4 in the final seconds last Wednesday, was on hand for Saturday’s NBA Championship Game in San Antonio as well.
“Way rather this than the Oscars! Come on, baby!” he shouted exuberantly to ESPN Sports Center after the win. “Knicks are champions, baby!”
The three-time Oscar nominee had narrowly missed winning best actor for “Marty Supreme” last March despite being favored to do so. Likewise, the Spurs had been favored to win the NBA championship, the entertainment news website Gold Derby reported.
Chalamet later posted a slo-mo video of him being doused in champagne in the locker room.
Longtime diehard Knicks fan Ben Stiller was also at the Frost Bank Center, wielding his phone to add to the series of videos he’s been filming, rumored to be for an upcoming documentary. So was “Do the Right Thing” director and longtime Knicks fan Spike Lee, accompanied by cast members John Turturro and Giancarlo Esposito. Tracy Morgan was nearby at courtside, and Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun were in the stands.
Not everyone could get to San Antonio, but their shouts may well have been heard in Texas.
“Every Brilliant Thing” and “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay posted an image of the New York Time’s cover honoring the win, captioned with a parade of orange and blue hearts. That was followed by a black-and-white photo of her hugging point guard, team captain and, as of Saturday, NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson on the court after Game 4, captioned simply, “Thank you Jalen Brunson for taking us there.”
