Is this all there is to life?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I returned from a long trip hoping to find myself, but after all the excitement of travel, I’m still in a fog and wonder what I did wrong. I wasted my money and time to feel the same as when I started. Is this all there is to life? – J.W.
A: Life is a journey. Like every other journey, it has a starting point. We have no choice about it, any more than we had a choice about our parents or the color of our eyes or our race. But the minute we were born, we embarked on a journey – the journey of life.
Like every other journey, it has an end. It may come suddenly or after years of declining health, but it will come – and like our birth, we’ll have no choice about it. We can ignore it or laugh at it, but that won’t change its inevitability.
But like every other journey, it also has a middle – and that’s the real journey: the time between our birth and our death. For most, our life’s journey will last many years.
Try as we might, we can’t turn back the clock or stop the relentless march of time. Some live past 100 years old, but regardless, when this life ends another journey begins – one that will last forever. For some, it is full of glory in the presence of Jesus Christ; for others, the “forever” is outside of His presence. This, then, is the key to life: for each of us to settle our eternity while we live, because when we take our last breath, there’s no more opportunity for us to prepare to meet our Maker. It doesn’t take a lifetime to make this vital decision. The Lord calls us to receive Him and live for Him today.
