What’s happened that self-life is so absorbing?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Self-help writers, podcasters and celebrity speakers fill people’s minds with propaganda that swings from telling us how bad we think we are to how great we can be by immersing ourselves in their programs of self-discovery, self-assessment and self-worth, with the aim to encourage people how they can live the good life without pain and working hard. It’s all rolled out by self-proclaimed life coaches with programs on “how to do life.” When I grew up, we didn’t have this obsession about pleasing ourselves. We learned that life was about working hard, being honest and doing for others. What’s happened that self-life is so absorbing? It’s a total loss of reality! – L.C.

A: Most people yearn for one thing: inner peace. People scramble to find answers in new ways as their hearts churn like a restless sea. The culture says strive for healthy bodies, gain wealth, have a good relationship and important position. There’s nothing wrong with these accomplishments, but it does not calm restlessness. We can try a thousand different things and still come up empty, while the human spirit keeps striving for worth.

Social media platforms give individuals a sounding board. On whims, people post an array of emotions and have only to wait a few moments for a reply, exposing broken hearts and confused minds with a simple click. Seldom are followers encouraged to turn to God [though some Christian-based sites do provide Biblical counsel].

The Bible speaks of “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds” (Philippians 4:7, NKJV). Reality is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:11).
