What does the Bible say about labor and leisure?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Labor Day for our nation has become one of leisure. What does the Bible say about labor and leisure, and what are the implications and applications? – L.P.

A: The Bible tells us to rest in the Lord even as we work. Resting in the Lord demonstrates our trust and faith in Him to strengthen us in fulfilling our purpose.

God didn’t create us just to have a good time – He put us here for a purpose, and while the Bible says a lot about work [not a great deal about leisure], His purpose for us is to live for Christ, share His salvation message with others, and anticipate Heaven with joy.

The farmer patiently watches his barren ground because of the ultimate goal – the fruits of labor. He has patience in his work because of the end result – sharing with others is part of the fruits of our labor in faithfully living for the Lord and being a testimony to His name. The Bible says, “Be patient … . See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth … . You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:7–8, NKJV).

We are strengthened with joy when we reach out to others, guarding against self-indulgence and showing patience even to those who may irritate us at times. Enduring ill-treatment without anger or retaliation is a fruit of the Spirit, referred to in Scripture as self-control (see Galatians 5:22–23). Our lives are to be characterized by following in the steps of Christ, which will result in developing stable character and integrity. He will grant us His power as we work and enjoy the fruits that come from honest work and wholesome recreation.
