DENVER — Two people are dead after a small plane crash near Centennial Airport this morning, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The reason for the crash, which happened just after 6:20 a.m., is not yet known, Douglas County spokeswoman Deborah Takahara said in a media briefing. At the time of the crash, there was a light rain, she said. The full investigation could take weeks or months.
Takahara did not offer any details about the identities of the people killed.
She said the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate. Brian Willie, a spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue, deferred to NTSB for any questions about whether the plane was coming or going from Centennial Airport.
The single-engine plane, a Beech BE35, caught fire during the crash, causing a threat to a nearby structure and a large generator. Responders contained that fire soon after. The incident was first reported as an explosion.
South Metro Fire Rescue first posted about the incident on social media.
